LSU is honoring the players who hung their cleats up 100 years ago to to serve in World War I, which in turn canceled the 1918 football season.
The Tigers helmets draws inspiration from French armor and is a nod to Louisiana’s heritage, making it the focal point of the uniform. The helmet will be covered in special iridescent paint allowing for the color to shift from purple to gold under the lights, similar to a Mardi Gras bead. The white uniform will feature purple numbers with a special font and oak leaf pattern that will be found in the numbers, collar and pant striping recognizes the soldiers honored in the Memorial Oak Grove on campus.
On the backs of the helmets we see an acknowledgement to 1918 as the Silent Season and as the year the United States claimed victory in World War I. The American flag decal depicts a 1918 flag with 48 stars, as Alaska and Hawaii had not yet been admitted into the Union. The final touch comes on the backs of the jerseys were no player will have a nameplate, to pay tribute to the unknown members of the LSU community who lost their lives in World War I.
