The Army Black knights will honor the soldiers of the 1st Armored Division during world world ii with this year’s SPECIAL uniforms for the Army vs Navy game. The uniform features design elements inspired by the tanks and armored vehicles that were used by “Iron Soldiers” of the 1st Armored Division.
“Operation Torch marked the 1st Armored Division’s entry into the crucible of combat. The resilience, grit, and commitment demonstrated by the soldiers ultimately resulted in the defeat of Axis forces in North Africa. In the harsh desert against a determined enemy, the members of the 1st Armored Division were forged into “Iron Soldiers” and learned the lessons that would guide them to success in subsequent operations in Italy and Western Europe.” - Army
The helmets for the special uniform feature the 1st armored division unit patch on the side, symbolizing the cohesive nature of the division by incorporating the tricolors of cavalry yellow, INFANTRY blue, and field artillery red.
The jerseys shoulder design is mocked after the World War II era M3 tanks, UTILIZING the 1st armored division color scheme, striping and star. Each player’s jersey will have the cadet’s REGIMENT number and company MASCOT on their right chest area, with the number being located within the star and mascot name below it. The special number font was inspired directly from the typograph seen on the M3 tanks.
The finishing touch come with the ‘mud splatter’ design on the jersey and helmet, signifying the reality of what tanks and armored vehicles looked like during operation torch and the nroth africa campaign.
Army will take the field in Philadelphia on December 10th in the special uniform as they play Navy in the annual Army vs Navy Game.
