UCF Football to Honor Pediatric Patients with Special Helmet Decals

This weekend The UCF Knights will take the field against the Sam Houston Bearkats with a meaningful twist: special helmet decals designed by pediatric patients from Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

The story behind these special decals began this past spring when UCF players visited the Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. The visit wasn’t just about spending time with the young patients; it was also an opportunity for the kids to unleash their creativity. The pediatric patients were invited to help design the decals that first appeared on the players' helmets during their spring game.

When the Knights step onto the field this Saturday evening, they will be wearing white helmets adorned with a distinctive “UCF” logo on each side, created by the children during the spring visit. Each side of the helmet will feature a differently-colored UCF logo, chosen from the designs made by the kids.

These decals were not just a creative exercise but a meaningful gesture led by UCF equipment manager Brad Anderson. Reflecting on the initiative, Anderson said, “We got such a good reaction from the spring game with the helmets that we really wanted to put this on the field for an actual game. Not just the spring game, but a game that counts towards us making the College Football Playoff.”

By featuring these unique helmet decals, UCF is not just honoring the creative spirit of the young patients but also shining a spotlight on Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. The decals represent a gesture of solidarity and support, amplifying awareness and bringing a heartfelt connection between the UCF Knights and the Orlando community.

Tar Heels Bring Back Helmet Decals for 2024 Season

This fall, the Carolina football team is bringing back a beloved tradition that dates back to the late 1970s: the Tar Heel foot decals on their helmets. Originally introduced during the Bill Dooley era, these decals serve as a visible reward for players who excel on the field, and they're making a comeback under Coach Mack Brown’s leadership.

The idea is simple yet powerful—players earn decals for hitting specific performance benchmarks during games. For example, if the Tar Heels open their season with a win against Minnesota, every player will add a decal to their helmet for the September 7th home opener against Charlotte. Individual achievements like rushing for 100 yards, executing a pancake block, or making 10 or more tackles will also be recognized with a decal.

Special teams players aren't left out either. If the kickoff team stops the opponent inside the 20-yard line, everyone on the unit earns a decal. Additionally, players named Offensive and Defensive Scout Team Player of the Week will receive decals, reinforcing the idea that every role on the team is vital.

This system is a nod to Brown’s first tenure at Carolina from 1988-97, when the program transformed from struggling with back-to-back 1-10 seasons to making six straight bowl appearances and securing Top 10 finishes in 1996-97. Brown saw the value in visible rewards back then, and he’s bringing them back now as the team looks to build on its recent success and push past the eight- to nine-win seasons that have become the norm.

"Everything we're doing now is trying to get from winning eight or nine games to winning every game," Brown said. "So, we're pulling out every little stop we feel might help our guys get better."

The helmet decals will be applied to both the Carolina blue and white helmets the team alternates throughout the season. White stickers will be used for the blue helmets, and blue stickers for the white helmets, creating a striking visual contrast that stands out on the field.

Graduate rush end Kaimon Rucker is particularly excited about the return of the decals. "There are some other teams in college football who do it, I like the way the decals pop out on their helmets," he said. "It gives them a little extra swag and style. We have a classy look—the Tar Heel foot and the black mark on the heel. It’s a little extra motivation and incentive."

As the Tar Heels gear up for the 2024 season, the return of the helmet decals is more than just a nod to the past—it’s a way to inspire the future. By recognizing individual and team achievements, this tradition adds an extra layer of competition and camaraderie, pushing the players to excel and proudly display their hard-earned accolades.

New Colorado State Football 'State Pride' Uniform

The Colorado State football team has just unveiled its latest "state pride" uniforms, and they’re a bold tribute to the Centennial State. Released ahead of the 2024 season, these uniforms continue the Rams' tradition of honoring the Colorado state flag, with some exciting new updates.

The most noticeable change is to the helmet. While one side still proudly displays the iconic red and yellow 'C' from the state flag, the other side now features "State" written in bold blue block letters, adding a fresh and modern touch. This dual design on the helmet is a unique way to blend tradition with innovation, capturing the spirit of Colorado.

The jerseys also feature "State" prominently across the front, with the distinctive flag patterns adorning the shoulders. This design not only reinforces the team’s connection to the state but also adds a striking visual element that’s sure to stand out on the field.

Colorado State will debut these "state pride" uniforms at home on September 21 against UTEP. Fans can expect to see the Rams donning these vibrant colors as they take the field, embodying the pride and heritage of Colorado.

This isn’t the first time CSU has embraced this theme. The "state pride" uniforms were first introduced in 2017, quickly becoming a fan favorite for their bold design and symbolic significance. With the release of the updated version, the Rams continue to celebrate their connection to the state while giving fans something new to cheer about.

The unveiling of the "state pride" uniforms follows the announcement of the new Ag Day uniforms earlier in the week, completing CSU’s full uniform set for the season. As the Rams gear up for 2024, these new looks promise to bring both style and state pride to every game.

Washington Football's Black Helmets

The University of Washington football team is synonymous with its classic purple and gold colors, a combination that embodies the rich history and tradition of Husky football. However, the Huskies are not afraid to break from tradition when the occasion calls for it. This week, the team unveiled a striking new black helmet, hinting at a special appearance this season—a move that has sparked both excitement and curiosity among fans.

In recent years, the all-purple uniform paired with the gold helmet has become a winning combination for Washington. This ensemble has accompanied the Huskies in some of their most memorable victories, including a triumphant win over Michigan State in 2022, a thrilling victory against Oregon in 2023, and their impressive performance in the 2024 Sugar Bowl against Texas. The Arizona State Sun Devils have unveiled a new gold Uniform, marking a fresh look as they transition into the Big XII conference. The Sun Devils are one of four adidas schools to debut a new uniform template this season, and their latest design is sure to turn heads.

The jersey is a striking gold, featuring bold maroon numbers outlined in metallic gold. The front of the jersey showcases a unique mesh venting material, which starts at the hem and rises in a modified pyramid pattern to the midsection, offering both style and functionality. Vent holes are also visible on the front of the collar, enhancing breathability for the players.

In addition to the prominent maroon numbers, "ARIZONA STATE" is displayed in maroon letters outlined in metallic gold above the numbers, reinforcing the team's identity. Above the wordmark, the jersey features the conference logo and a PT*42 (Pat Tillman memorial) patch, paying tribute to the Sun Devils' legendary alumnus. The makers mark, also in metallic gold, is located on the left chest, while TV numbers sit atop the shoulders, maintaining the maroon and metallic gold theme.

A notable addition to the uniform is the new Big XII logo, reflecting ASU's move into the conference. The logo is rendered in metallic gold with a maroon border, symbolizing the Sun Devils' new chapter.

The uniform was initially shown paired with a maroon helmet and gold pants, along with an untucked undershirt. However, it's important to note that while this maroon/gold/gold combination was showcased, it may not be the final combination the team chooses to wear on the field.

As of now, the team has not announced when the new gold jersey will make its debut. Fans are eagerly awaiting the moment when the Sun Devils take the field in their new gear, ready to shine in the Big XII conference.
